Just one day after the Dent County Commissioners in Salem, Missouri voted in favor oflowering the American Flag and Missouri's state flag on the 26th of every month for a year to protest the SCOTUS's Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that legalized marriage equality across the United States of America and its territories, they reversed their decision after massive outrage on social media and in the news for their disrespectful decision.

Joel Currier at STLToday.com:

The flags in Dent County will not be lowered after all.

A day after county commissioners voted to lower the flags below half-staff to 'mourn' the same-sex marriage decision by the Supreme Court, it appears the three men have had a change of heart.

On Tuesday morning, Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles told The Salem News that today or Wednesday the commission would meet in special session to rescind the vote "out of respect for veterans and those currently serving in the military."

Lindsay Toler at STLMag.com:
Commissioner Darrell Skiles tells Salem News he expects all three commission members will vote to cancel the order “out of respect for veterans and those currently serving in the military” in a special session held today or Wednesday.

Flags fly at half-staff to symbolize respect or mourning, such as after the deaths of soldiers. Dent’s decision to lower flags drew anger from people nationwide who felt it was disrespectful to compare disagreements over a Supreme Court ruling to the deaths of military servicemembers.

But Dent County officials didn’t just want their flags at half-staff. The order approved by the county commission Monday would lower U.S. and state flags to a level below half-staff once a month for a year in front of the buildings where same-sex couples apply for marriage licenses.

“May all who see these flags at this lowered position be reminded of this despicable Supreme Court travesty,” Skiles wrote in the proposal expected to be overturned later this week. “We feel sadness, shame, and outright revulsion of the U.S. high court’s stamp of approval of what God speaks of as an abomination.”
