My 2016 Presidential Election Preview + GOTV

With the election coming tomorrow, here is my preview on the Presidential election that their state’s voters will be voting today (or earlier if you already have done so).

President Barack Obama (D) is constitutionally barred from running a 3rd term, so the President and VP’s seats are open. Hillary Clinton (D), Donald Trump (R), Gary Johnson (L), Jill Stein (G), Evan McMullin (I), and a host of other Independents and smaller parties are running for this office. Who will be the 45th President to lead our nation in the White House?

The candidates running:

Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine (D):

Home State: New York (Clinton), Virginia (Kaine)
Birth State: Illinois (Clinton), Minnesota (Kaine)

Fun Facts: If this ticket is elected, then the United States will have elected its 1st female to be President of the United States. Hillary was FLOTUS under her husband Bill from 1993-2001, and was First Lady of Arkansas from 1979-1981 and 1983-1992 while her husband was Governor of Arkansas. Both Clinton and Kaine were (or still are) Senators (Clinton [2001-2009 (elected in 2000 and 2006), NY], Kaine [2013-present (elected in 2012), VA]). She ran for President in 2008 and lost in the Democratic Primaries to the current President Barack Obama (D), who later won in the 2008 and 2012 general elections.  Kaine was Governor of Virginia from 2006-2010 (elected in 2005).

This ticket has gotten a lot of newspaper endorsements from papers who seldom (or never) ever endorse Democrats for the Presidency (or at all generally), such as Dallas Morning News, Arizona Republic, Cincinnati Enquirer, San Diego Union-Tribune, and The Columbus Dispatch.

Donald Trump/Mike Pence (R):

Home State: New York (Trump), Pence (Indiana)
Birth State: New York (Trump), Pence (IndIana)

Fun Facts: Trump attempted to run for President in 2000, on the Reform Party ticket and with a much different platform from his current Presidential run on the GOP ticket. Pence is currently the Governor of Indiana (2013-present) and was a former Congressman (2001-2013).

This ticket has gotten fewer newspaper endorsements than a typical GOP ticket would normally get. The notable papers endorsing this ticket are Las Vegas Review-Journal, St. Joseph News-Press, Santa Barbara News-Press, The News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne, IN), and the Florida Times-Union.

Gary Johnson/William Weld (L):

Home State: New Mexico (Johnson), Massachusetts (Weld)
Birth State: North Dakota (Johnson), New York (Weld)

Fun Facts: Both Johnson and Weld were former Republicans and governors of their respective states in the 1990s and early 2000s (Johnson, NM [1995-2003]; Weld, MA [1991-1997]). Johnson also ran for President in 2012, with Jim P. Gray as his running mate.

This ticket has nabbed more paper endorsements for a third party Presidential campaign than typical. The notable papers endorsing this ticket are Richmond Times-Dispatch, Chicago Tribune, New Hampshire Union Leader, and The Detroit News.

Jill Stein/Ajamu Baraka (G):

Home State: Massachusetts (Stein), D.C. (Baraka)
Birth State: Illinois (Stein), Illinois (Baraka)
Fun Facts: Both Stein and Baraka are born in Chicago, Illinois.  Stein also ran for President in 2012, with Cheri Honkala as her running mate. This ticket has no notable paper endorsements.
Home State: Utah (McMullin), Texas (Finn)
Birth State: Utah (McMullin), Texas (Finn)
Fun Facts: If McMullin/Finn were to win a state (Utah), it would be the first time since 1968 that a party other than the Democrats and the GOP won a state at the Presidential level.  As of this writing, The Provo Daily Herald in Provo, UT is the sole paper to endorse this ticket.
